Where Does Medicaid Come In?
A semi-private room in a Florida nursing home costs more than $12,000 per month.
Can you afford that?
Many people mistakenly think they have too many assets to qualify for government assistance. However, even with a large estate, paying out-of-pocket for Long-Term Care until your savings is gone isn’t your only choice.
Do I have to spend everything I have to qualify for Medicaid?
Medicaid does provide some exceptions to spending down your entire savings and allows you to keep some assets.
There are also several legal tools available when planning for medicaid:
Medicaid Asset Protection Trusts – A medicaid Asset Protection trust (MAPT) is a type of irrevocable trust that protects assets from being counted towards medicaid’s asset limit. However, you must utilize this tool well before applying for medicaid.
Irrevocable funeral Trusts – These Trusts cannot be changed or canceled, sometimes set up to pay for the medicaid applicant’s funeral in advance.
Spend down – Spending excess assets by purchasing “excluded assets” or paying expenses.
Lady bird deeds – The medicaid recipient still has ownership over their home during their life. However, the house is automatically transferred to the named beneficiary upon their death.
Spousal transfers – Transfers of assets or income between a spouse in the nursing home and the spouse in the community.
Qualified income Trusts / miller Trusts – Income over the limit is allocated into a qualified irrevocable income or miller trust and is generally used to pay one’s medical bills and care.
