Veteran Benefits: Aid and Attendance
June 22, 2023 – Barry D. Siegel, Esq.
As a veteran who has served your country, you may be entitled to various benefits depending on your service history, disability status, and other factors. These benefits can greatly enhance your quality of life and are designed to provide various forms of support and assistance. However, many veterans may not be aware of the veteran pension called Aid and Attendance that be available to them or their surviving spouse. That is why the Veteran’s Benefits Attorneys at The Siegel Law Group, P.A., have put together this article to Aid and Attendance.
Veteran Pension: Aid and Attendance
The VA Aid and Attendance Pension (A&A) is a monthly payment that is added to the basic VA pension for veterans and their surviving spouses who need help with daily living activities or are housebound. The A&A benefit can be used to pay for a variety of expenses, such as:
- Home care
- Assisted living
- Nursing home care
- Medical equipment
- Personal care
To be eligible for the A&A benefit, veterans must meet the following requirements:
- Must be 65 years of age or older or have a permanent and total disability
- Must have served on active duty for at least 90 days, including at least one day during a period of war
- Must meet the clinical requirements, which means that they must need help with activities of daily living or be housebound
- Must meet the financial requirements, which means that their income and assets must fall below certain limits
Surviving spouses of eligible veterans may also be eligible for the A&A benefit if they meet the clinical and financial requirements and have not remarried.
Are You A Veteran Age 65 Or Older?
Veterans 65 years or older or with a permanent and total disability may be eligible for a VA pension. This benefit provides a monthly income to eligible veterans and their surviving spouses. The pension amount is determined based on factors such as:
- Income
- Assets
- Medical expenses
- Number of dependents
- Whether you’re married to another veteran
As of 2023, the net worth limit to be eligible for Veterans Pension benefits is $150,538. However, the VA uses a specific process to assess the net worth of pension entitlement. Refer to our previous article here for a more detailed breakdown of pension rates and other veterans’ benefits.
